How much does performance marketing cost in India?
What a performance marketing agency costs in India: a share of ad spend or a flat retainer, what each tier covers, what moves the fee and what sits outside it.
Percentage of ad spend or a flat retainer?
Choose a percentage of ad spend if the agency’s work will grow as your budget does, and a flat retainer if you can set out in advance what it will do each month. Percentage fees usually come with a minimum. A flat retainer, which is how we charge, bills the full fee in a month when you spend little.
With a percentage fee, the agency takes a share of what you spend on the platforms each month. Ish Batra’s 2026 analysis of agency pricing in India, published on Growth Astronaut, says that share is often around 8–15%. It also points out that the model can pay the agency more for raising your budget, even when the extra spend earns you less than what came before.
The minimum is there because a share of a small budget doesn’t pay for much work. The same analysis works out that a 10% fee on ₹1 lakh of spend comes to ₹10,000, which may be too little to pay for proper strategy and reporting. So a percentage fee usually comes with a monthly floor, and a small budget pays the floor rather than the percentage.
Hybrids sit between the two, with a base retainer plus a percentage, or a base plus a bonus for hitting agreed results. A bonus only works when you and the agency agree on how results are measured.
A flat retainer doesn’t change when your budget does, so the agency earns nothing extra by asking you to spend more. It suits a business whose monthly workload is predictable, whatever the budget.
Freelancer, agency or in-house team?
Hire a freelancer for a single job, such as running one channel or fixing tracking, and an agency when you need campaigns, new ads and measurement handled by one team. Build an in-house team once paid media is a big enough part of the business to keep specialists busy all year.
A freelancer suits a business that already has the rest covered. Growth Astronaut’s band for a freelancer or solo media buyer is ₹15,000–₹35,000 a month, for one channel, a smaller budget and little creative or analytics work. When the ads wear out or the tracking breaks, someone else has to fix it.
Growth Astronaut’s bands for agencies run from ₹35,000–₹75,000 a month for a small specialist agency to ₹75,000–₹2.5 lakh for a multi-channel performance agency and ₹2.5 lakh–₹5 lakh or more for a full-funnel or premium one. Batra calls them “synthesized reference bands, not fixed market tariffs”.
An agency shares its people across several clients and learns your business from the outside. At Legit, one strategist owns your account from the audit onward, with an update every week and a review call every month.
An in-house hire works only on your account and learns your customers and margins first-hand. One salary usually buys one skill set, though, so a media buyer still needs someone to make the ads, and the software for ads and tracking is paid for on top.
What does each performance marketing engagement include?
Audit & rebuild is a one-off of two to three weeks covering an account and tracking audit, a campaign restructure, conversion tracking fixes and a handover plan. The growth retainer manages Meta Ads and Google Ads month to month, with a monthly creative refresh, weekly tests and a live dashboard. The full-funnel retainer covers every paid channel.
The audit goes through your ad accounts, tracking, ads and landing pages to find where budget is wasted. It suits a team with campaigns already running that wants an outside view and a clean set-up. Its limit is that it ends with the handover, and from then on your team runs the campaigns unless you move to a retainer.
The growth retainer is for ongoing management of your core channels, with budget shifts toward whatever the weekly tests show is working. If you haven’t yet picked a platform to start on, our comparison of Meta Ads or Google Ads weighs the two for different kinds of business.
The full-funnel retainer is for brands scaling spend across several channels and markets. It adds weekly creative production, landing page CRO and attribution and revenue modelling. It costs the most of the three, and a business running two platforms in one market would pay for capacity it doesn’t use.
What makes performance marketing cost more or less?
Performance marketing costs more as it spreads across more channels and markets, as it needs new ads more often and as tracking and reporting go deeper. Two platforms with a monthly creative refresh sit at the lower end. Weekly creative across every paid channel, with landing page tests and revenue modelling, sits at the higher end.
| Driver | Lower cost | Higher cost |
|---|---|---|
| Number of channels | Meta Ads and Google Ads. | All paid channels; TikTok and LinkedIn Ads as well as Meta Ads and Google Ads. |
| Creative volume | A monthly creative refresh. | Weekly creative production of static, video and UGC-style ads. |
| Tracking set-up | Pixel tracking, with conversion tracking fixed in the audit. | Server-side tracking; CRM and offline conversions. |
| Landing pages and CRO | Your current landing pages, reviewed in the audit. | Landing page variants; ongoing CRO tests. |
| Markets and languages | One market in one language. | Several markets, each with its own campaigns and ads. |
| Reporting depth | A live dashboard; a weekly update and a monthly review call. | Attribution and revenue modelling across channels. |
What isn’t included in the fee?
Our fee doesn’t include the ad spend, which you pay straight to Meta, Google and any other platform. Creators for UGC-style ads, paid tools and stock footage sit outside it too, along with any website or new landing page build. We bill those costs at cost, or you pay the supplier directly.
The ad accounts are set up in your name, so the budget stays yours to set. Before you agree a figure with any agency, read how much to spend on ads in India.
Landing page CRO in the full-funnel retainer means testing variants of pages you already have. A new website or a new set of landing pages is a separate build with its own quote.
When you compare quotes, ask each agency to list which of these items its fee covers. Growth Astronaut warns that “A ₹75K quote can become ₹1.5L very quickly if everything important sits outside scope”.
What does performance marketing typically cost?
With us in India, audit & rebuild costs ₹40,000–₹1,00,000 as a one-off, the growth retainer ₹50,000–₹1,25,000 a month and the full-funnel retainer ₹1,25,000–₹3,00,000 a month, all excluding GST and ad spend. Where you land within a range depends on the drivers in the table above.
Set against Growth Astronaut’s bands, our growth retainer costs more than a freelancer. It starts inside the small specialist agency band and runs into the multi-channel one, so a business comparing us with the cheaper end of that small-agency band will find us dearer. The difference pays for new ads from our team each month, weekly tests and a live dashboard. Batra describes the small-agency band as paid media with basic reporting and some creative strategy.
Our full-funnel retainer sits mostly in the multi-channel band, and only its top end reaches the full-funnel or premium band, which starts at ₹2.5 lakh. Batra gives no band for a one-off audit, so we have no market figure to set ours against.
