How much does SEO cost in India?
What SEO costs in India: freelancer, agency or in-house, what a monthly retainer covers, what moves the price and when an audit alone is enough.
Freelancer, agency or in-house?
You can buy SEO three ways. A freelancer costs least, but one person covers technical work, content and links, so something usually gets less time. An agency costs more and brings technical SEO, content, local SEO and AEO (answer engine optimisation) from one team. An in-house hire gives you full control, but one salary buys one skill set.
A freelancer suits a narrow job, such as fixing technical problems before a relaunch or writing a set of service pages. SEO spans crawling and indexing, content, links, local listings and AI answers, and few people are strong at all of them. Ask a freelancer which parts they’ll do themselves and which they’ll leave out.
An agency suits a business that needs several of those at once. At Legit, one strategist owns the account, sends a monthly report and holds a review call with you.
An in-house hire knows your business and works only on it, and you pay for SEO tools on top of the salary.
For a sense of the market, Wild Creek Web Studio’s 2026 guide puts monthly SEO in India at ₹5,000–₹25,000 for a freelancer, ₹15,000–₹50,000 for a small agency, ₹40,000–₹1,00,000 for a mid-size agency and ₹75,000–₹1,50,000 or more for enterprise SEO. Wild Creek sells SEO itself, so treat these as one agency’s view of the market.
What does an SEO retainer include?
A Growth retainer covers technical fixes and monitoring, monthly content, local SEO, and a monthly report and review call. Search & AI visibility adds programmatic pages, AEO and AI citation tracking, and digital PR to earn links. Both start after a one-off SEO audit, which you can also buy on its own.
The SEO audit takes two to three weeks. It covers a technical crawl and audit, content and keyword gaps, and an AI visibility check, and ends in a prioritised roadmap: a fix list your own team or developers can work through.
Search & AI visibility suits businesses in crowded markets. Our own team does the digital PR and link earning.
Retainers end with 30 days’ notice. Our writers produce the pages, guides and programmatic templates, and your team reviews them before they go live. Each monthly report covers rankings, organic traffic, AI citations and the enquiries and sales we can trace to search.
What makes SEO cost more or less?
Competition moves the price more than site size does. A business in a crowded market needs more content and more links before it ranks, and each extra location or set of programmatic pages adds work. A smaller site in a quieter market, with few technical problems, sits at the low end of each range.
| Driver | Lower cost | Higher cost |
|---|---|---|
| Competition in your market | A local or niche market where few competitors publish much. | A crowded national market, where competitors have years of content and links. |
| Site size and technical state | A small site that search engines already crawl and index cleanly. | A large site with crawling, indexing or Core Web Vitals problems to fix first. |
| Content volume | A few new pages a month. | Several pages and guides a month, or programmatic templates that build many pages. |
| Link earning and digital PR | Local citations and listings. | Ongoing digital PR to earn links from publications in your industry. |
| Number of locations | One location and one Google Business Profile. | Many locations, each with its own profile, location page, reviews and listings. |
| AI visibility tracking | A one-off AI visibility check, as part of the audit. | Ongoing AEO work and monthly tracking of where AI answers cite you. |
Do you need an audit or a retainer?
Buy the audit alone if your team or developers can make the fixes themselves. It takes two to three weeks and ends in a prioritised fix list. Choose a retainer if you need the work done every month: fixes, new content, local listings and links, with a monthly report on what changed.
The audit suits a business with a developer and someone who can write. If they work through the fix list, the audit is all you pay us for.
A retainer suits a team without that time or those skills. Technical fixes can lift rankings within weeks, but content and links usually take three to six months to show in rankings and AI answers, so plan to keep the work going at least that long. See how long SEO takes to work.
What do you get from cheap SEO?
A very cheap retainer can’t pay for much hand work, so check whether it buys automated reports, bulk links or thin pages. Bulk links and thin pages can do harm. Google’s spam policies name buying links and automated link building as link spam, and sites that break the policies can rank lower or drop out of results.
Price alone tells you little. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, 76% of the India-based SEOs charged $1,000 or less a month. A low price can be fair for a small, contained job.
Google’s spam policies also cover scaled content abuse: generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings, with little or no value for readers. Hundreds of thin pages written to a keyword list fit that description. Programmatic pages are worth building only where each one answers a different search with its own facts, such as a page per location.
Ask any supplier, us included, to put in writing what the retainer delivers each month: which fixes, how many pages, which links and what the report covers. Be wary of anyone who promises a ranking. Google’s advice on hiring an SEO says: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.”
What does SEO typically cost?
In India, an SEO audit costs ₹30,000–₹75,000 as a one-off, a Growth retainer ₹40,000–₹1,00,000 a month, and Search & AI visibility ₹1,00,000–₹2,50,000 a month. Our fees exclude GST, and tools and listings are billed at cost. Search & AI visibility costs more because it adds digital PR, programmatic pages and AI citation tracking.
Where you land within a range depends on the drivers in the table above. We agree your retainer after the audit, once we know where you stand on each.
